Next CIA Meeting is Tuesday, April 5, 2011

Our next meeting will be at 6:30 pm, Tuesday, April 5 at Spurlock's Restaurant, 721 Main Street.  We have reserved their private room and will be ordering from their standard menu.  If you don’t wish to eat there, you are most welcome to join us for the fellowship and meeting.  In order to assure the appropriate space and wait staff are available, please confirm you plan to attend by Saturday, April 2 to  lafayetteinteaparty@gmail.com.

Beginning with this meeting, as we head into local elections in 2011 and statewide and national elections in 2012, we will try to have candidates for office speak briefly to our group.  Andrew Phillips, Republican candidate for mayor of Lafayette will be our guest on April 5.  Please bring your questions.

Indiana Democrats End Their Walkout

Republican Speaker of the House Brian Bosma has announced that he expects the legislators to return by 5 p.m. Monday. Apparently, democrats in Urbana voted to end the walkout this morning.

Our friend Abdul Shabazz has more details:

• Right-to-work legislation is off the table, preserving collective bargaining rights;

• The permanent ban on public employee bargaining is off the table in the House;

• Enabling legislation for private takeover of public schools is off the table in the House;

• Private school vouchers will be limited to 7,500 students in the first year and 15,000 in the second year, rather than the largest voucher program in the nation the Republicans originally wanted;

• Rather than an outright ban of Project Labor Agreements as Republicans wanted, PLAs still can be included with projects passed by public referendum; and

• The threshold for applying the common construction wage to projects would be $250,000 for 2012 and $350,000 for 2013, rather than the job-killing $1 million threshold the Republicans wanted.
 

Mr. Shabazz has called this a pyrrhic victory for the democrats. In his words:


" The language regarding project labor agreements has been on the table for the last few weeks.  The only real change is the timeline and when it goes into effect.  The dollar amounts are phased in over two years as opposed to being implemented in just one year. In addition, the bills regarding public employee bargaining and the “takeover” over public schools are off the table in the House.  It says nothing about whether the bills can come up in the Senate.   And the voucher legislation was already set long before the Democrats came back."

Perhaps  the democrats  were looking for a way to save face.  Or perhaps they received a lot of very vocal criticism last week during the redistricting public hearings.

Indiana Held Hostage Day 32

We are now starting the 32nd day with the Indiana state democrats in Urbana and not in Indianapolis doing the work we elected them to do.

According to this website , people are beginning to question the source of their travel funds. From the writer, Abdul Hakim Shabazz:

Don’t be surprised if you see an ethics complaint filed against the Indiana Democratic Party over its covering of the costs for absentee Democrats in Illinois. There’s a question as to whether contributions to the Party to pay for the hotel rooms is coming from any lobbyists of political action committees which would run afoul of state law.  Frankly, I’m surprised Indiana Democrats haven’t disclosed their list of donors to put this all to bed...

I sure would like to know who is paying Sheila Klinker's travel expenses. Perhaps we should start a phone campaign to Sheila's office asking a few pertinent questions.

State Republican Chair to Visit Tippecanoe Republican Headquarters

Our new State Republican Chairman Eric Holcomb has agreed to visit the Young Republicans and the College Republicans this Tuesday, March 22^nd at Tippecanoe Republican Headquarters.  The event will begin at 5pm and Eric will start speaking at 5:30pm.  Everyone is welcome to attend.

Indiana House and Senate to Host Public Hearings on Redistricting

 

Members of the House and Senate Election Committees will be holding public hearings on redistricting in 8 separate locations throughout the State.  The hearings are designed to allow for the public’s input regarding new legislative district boundaries for the Indiana House of Representatives, the Indiana Senate and the nine Congressional districts.

Education Seminar at Purdue University

The Purdue College Republicans are sponsoring an appearance by film director and Purdue University alumnus Bob Bowdon on campus March 23. His award-winning documentary, "The Cartel," which will be shown at the forum, has blown the lid off the status quo in our schools.
