Hoosier Cheer for our Heroes

Holidays can be lonely times for military men and women serving our country. That's why a card or note from home - even if it comes from a complete stranger - can do so much to lift morale.

Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman and her staff are once again providing the opportunity for Indiana residents to say thanks in the fifth annual "Hoosier Cheer For Our Heroes" campaign.

Last year, Skillman delivered 35,629 cards to Major Gen. Martin Umbarger, Adjutant General of the Indiana National Guard, as part of the campaign. It was the largest total in the program's four-year history.

These cards - sent by Hoosiers from as many as 60 Indiana counties - were delivered to eight Indiana National Guard units serving in Afghanistan, six serving in Iraq and two others serving at different spots around the globe. Officials at Skillman's office said some of the cards were also delivered to the Naval Reserves.

Shipping costs will be defrayed thanks to generous support from the Indiana Statewide Association of Rural Electric Cooperatives and enGreet, an Indianapolis-based online greeting card company. Anyone may use the enGreet web site - www.engreet.com - to personalize and send a card as part of the Hoosier Cheer For Our Heroes campaign. Cards ordered online will be printed and mailed for free with personalized messages and photos.

All correspondence must be sent to the lieutenant governor's office or ordered on enGreet's website by Friday, Nov. 18, so delivery to troops can be completed before Christmas.

In the four years since Skillman started the "Hoosier Cheer for Our Heroes" campaign, approximately 92,000 cards have been donated and delivered from virtually every county in Indiana.

Occupy Wall Street

The standard portrayal of the Wall Street protesters goes something like this: Ragtag group of unemployed young adults, venting often incoherent but overall legitimate populist outrage about economic inequality. But go down to the movement’s headquarters, as I did this past weekend, and you see something far different.

It’s not just that knowledge of their “oppressors” -- the evil bankers -- is pretty thin, or that many of them are clearly college kids with nothing better to do than embrace the radical chic of “a cause.” I found a unifying and increasingly coherent ideology emerging among the protesters, which at its core has less to do with the evils of the banking business and more about the evils of capitalism -- and the need for a socialist revolution.

This movement is the antithesis of the Tea Party movement. The Tea Party wishes to restore the rule of law and preserve private property rights. OWS is a Marxist driven movement intent on destruction of this country's founding ideals.

Tea Party vs The Occupiers

Tea Partiers and Occupiers are born of the same environment. Ideology does not affect reality. Whether you are a constitutional conservative or a rabble-rousing Marxist, we have all seen the American economy implode. We have all seen the housing bubble burst and the subsequent bailouts of banks and favored corporations. Likewise, we have all been privy to the gridlock in Washington, to the debates over the debt ceiling, government stimuli, and how to best recover from recession.

However, these events have been viewed from decisively different perspectives, producing wildly different protests. The consensus such as it is among Occupiers is that bankers, corporations, and the wealthy are to blame for the nation’s wrecked economy. The Tea Party recognizes that government is the chief actor. It’s not as though Goldman Sachs or Chrysler can tax Americans. Only government can do that. Only government can bail out private interests with public funds.

By failing to recognize the government’s role in the bailouts, Occupiers find themselves in the paradoxical position of advocating precisely what they claim to protest. Occupiers typically call for some form of wealth redistribution. They call for taxing the wealthy to provide for everyone else. What they don’t seem to realize is that the bailouts they claim to be against were precisely that! By definition, a government bailout is the seizure and redistribution of wealth to insulate bad actors from malinvestment. In that way, bailing out Wall Street is fundamentally no different than bailing out student loans (one of the Occupiers’ demands). One cannot be against the bailouts and for socialism, as they are one and the same.
