Labor unions like to portray collective bargaining as a basic civil liberty, akin to the freedoms of speech, press, assembly and religion. For a teachers union, collective bargaining means that suppliers of teacher services to all public school systems in a state—or even across states—can collude with regard to acceptable wages, benefits and working conditions. An analogy for business would be for all providers of airline transportation to assemble to fix ticket prices, capacity and so on. From this perspective, collective bargaining on a broad scale is more similar to an antitrust violation than to a civil liberty.

After Action Report on HR 1
Last week the House of Representatives passed HR 1, to fund the government for the rest of the fiscal year. Included in this bill were several budget cutting proposals. Some congressmen voted for every spending cut, while others voted for some or no cuts. Heritage Foundation has compiled a list of congressmen and their voting record on these cuts. This list can be found here.
It is refreshing to see that Rokita from Indiana District 4 voted for every spending cut. It is not surprising to note that there are some democrats who could not find any budget cut worth supporting.

95 Members (all Democrats) showed no appetite to cut spending by voting against every single spending cut. Another 47 (Democrats) voted against all but one of the cuts.
In other words, 73% (142 out of 193) of the Democratic caucus could only find one or less spending cut they could support.
What planet do they live on?

Call to Action
When legislators deliberately defy the laws of the state and they are not enforced by the state, you have anarchy. Our form of government cannot operate in anarchy. It is the DUTY of the Governor to maintain order. The legislators who left the floor of the Indiana House yesterday are in direct violation of Part IV A. Rule 36:

House unless excused by the Speaker, is sick or is unable to attend.

They represent all their constituents not just the ones who agree with them. They are doing a disservice to their constituents and their state by not debating and voting on the legislation. This is the job that they are paid to do.
OUR Country, OUR State needs someone with the fortitude to stand up for the people. Governor Daniels needs to act on this matter and show the country he does have the strength of leadership needed to guide Indiana through these trying times. We will support candidates in the future who show leadership.

The Indianapolis Tea Party will be holding a Flash Protest Rally on Friday, February 25, from 12 (Noon) to 1:00 PM EST, at the Indiana Statehouse. Meet on the East side (Capitol Street).

The Petulant Child Form of Democracy

One paper called their action an “exodus.” I call it a gross abdication of responsibility and a slap in the face of the people who entrusted them with the conduct of their public affairs. What lessons can we draw from the behavior of these truant lawmakers? One important lesson is this: that they view democracy as a game worth playing only when they get to call the shots. They are happy to sit down and do business just so long as they get their way. If they do not get their way, their recourse is not the time-honored democratic strategies of debate, persuasion, and compromise. No, their response is to take their votes and go home — or to Illinois, whichever is safer.

Indianapolis Tea Party Rally

Senate President Pro Tempore David Long, R-Fort Wayne, said that he, House Speaker Brian Bosma, R-Indianapolis, and Gov. Mitch Daniels all agree that controversial right-to-work bill is now dead and instead should be studied by a legislative committee later this year.
However, this does not mean the democrats are going back to work! Again according the article linked above, Democrats are still meeting in an Urbana, Ill., hotel room behind closed doors discussing their next steps. Last night they issued a statement saying they had concerns about 11 other bills.
Representative Charlie Brown( D- Gary) said Democrats were not returning to Indiana.
These people are holding our state government hostage. Wonder how Gov. Daniels now feels about negotiating with hostage takers?
The Indianapolis Tea party is having a rally on Friday, February 25 to urge our democrats back to work.

Just a reminder, if you have not confirmed you plan to attend, that Citizens in Action invites you to a dinner meeting at Spurlock’s at 6:30 pm,Tuesday, March 1. Bring your ideas and enthusiasm about CIA's direction and focus in 2011. We may have been successful in the November elections, but our work is far from over as guardians of the Constitution at the local, state, and national levels!
Spurlock’s is located in downtown Lafayette at 721 Main Street. We have reserved their private room and will be ordering from their standard menu. Each person will be responsible for his/her own check. If you don’t wish to eat there, you are most welcome to join us for the fellowship and meeting. Invite a friend or two as well who would like to get involved in CIA.
