I wanted to forward some additional information to you from our meeting earlier this week. I am including an attachment for your review that discusses some of the measures that were taken and are planned in regard to the Obamacare Implementation. It is important for you to know that I did vote YES in a roll call vote supporting legislation that would have prohibited Indiana from implementing or preparing to implement most of the Obamacare provisions. This was in the House passed version of SEA 461. However, during conference committee changes were made as a result of the agencies wanting to at least be able to prepare in case Obamacare withstands the constitutional and 2012 challenges.
In regard to education funding, Indiana spends 47% of its total budget on K-12 funding, and when Higher Ed is included, that number jumps to 59%. According to the Sagamore Institute (Indianapolis-based nonprofit, nonpartisan, public policy research organization), Indiana ranks #1 in the nation in the percentage of its state budget that goes to K-12 education. The fact that Indiana spends more than half its budget on education is no small feat and shows Indiana’s commitment to education.
I was off when I estimated per pupil funding (old numbers stuck in my brain) and wanted you guys to have the latest and greatest. Indiana average per student funding for CY2011 (this is based on the pervious budget) is $6,258. Estimated per pupil funding for the budget just passed is $6,283 in 2012 and $6,344 in 2013.
Hope this is helpful!
Randy
